Moonbeam Theatre Summer Camp 2011

Welcome to Moonbeam Theatre summer camp. Thanks to all who attended last year's summer theatre camp and the winter Saturday sessions as well. This summer, the camp is entitled "What Are You Doing?" which is the name of an improvisational game that incorporates quick thinking with movement and creativity, which are all hallmarks of theatre and improv. We will continue to explore improvisation and original stories as we delve further into the building blocks of theatre in a fun and creative way. We'll also choose a piece of music from the musical theatre repertoire that we will workshop with the group. It's going to be a fun week with something for everyone!

Improvisational Theatre

Improvisational theatre is a form of theatre in which the improvisational actors/ improvisers use techniques to perform spontaneously. Improvisers typically use audience suggestions to guide the performance as they create dialogue, setting, and plot extemporaneously. Improvisational theatre performances tend to be comedic, although some forms, are not intended to be comedic.

Many improvisational actors/ improvisers also work as scripted actors, and "improv" techniques are often taught in standard acting classes. The basic skills of listening, clarity, confidence, and performing instinctively and spontaneously are considered important skills for actors to develop.

Story Theatre

Story Theatre is creative group play that is based on the work of Paul Sills and Viola Spolin. This work had its start as social work in the early 1900's at the Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago. It was here that immigrant children came together to play games, tell stories, dance, and use drama as tools for stimulating creative expression. This work led to the founding of The Second City in Chicago. Spolin once said, "With intuitive awareness comes certainty." Here at Moonbeam Theatre we nurture that intuitive awareness while building a foundation for the performance arts.
